Lymphatic Massage
Welcome to Flow Lymphatic Massage. We are incredibly happy you decided to come by. It is an amazing journey into the world of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) massage. Let’s take a look into those burning questions. How does a lymphatic drainage massage work? What are the benefits of a lymphatic massage? How and why, you’ll feel a completely different kind of massage. It will feel like a whole lot of nothing, but it is really doing a whole lot of everything, dancing in your system.
What To Expect
Before you start your MLD session, you and your therapist will discuss any issues, areas of focus, areas to avoid and a general intake of everything needed to address your reasons for your session. Your personalized session will take place on a standard massage table. Once you’re situated, the therapist will use customized light and gentle strokes, soft stretching of skin and circular motions, to stimulate the lymphatic system.
Communication is key! Before, after and even during the session, feel free to let your therapist know if you’d like any adjustments (your comfort is our goal). Afterward, your therapist may offer recommendations for follow-up treatments or even self-care.
It is VERY important that you take your time getting up after your session. It is not uncommon to be lightheaded or dizzy, to feel extraordinarily relaxed, light, and energized after the session. In some instances, you may experience some tiredness later and that is normal as your body detoxifies. Absolutely stray hydrated (and from a Diet Coke only drinker, I will cave and drink LOTS of water after an MLD massage). You may consider light physical activity to boost the lymph flow, but only after you are feeling stable and safe to do so. After your session, feel free to continue your relaxation by resting, a warm soak or even a nap.
What is MLD?
Lymphatic drainage, sometimes called manual lymphatic drainage massage, is a gentle and rhythmical massage that is designed to stimulate the circulation of lymph fluid around the body. This stimulation helps to rapidly speed up the removal of waste and toxins from the body, aids in the prevention of swelling after injury or surgery and can significantly boost your immune system.
Types of Lymphatic Drainage Massage
There are two main types of lymphatic drainage massage, manual lymphatic drainage and simple lymphatic drainage. Flow Lymphatic Massage offers both, from only certified and trained LMT’s.
• Manual lymphatic drainage – carried out by a specially trained massage therapist who uses gentle hand movements in a range of different sequences that are designed to increase lymph flow through the body.
• Simple lymphatic drainage – a less complex technique based on the principles of manual lymphatic drainage and uses simplified hand movements in a set sequence to stimulate the lymph nodes.
What Are the Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage Massage?
• Reduction of stress, fatigue, skin swelling, scar tissue, bloating and water retention
• Improves the appearance of acne, cellulite and stretch marks
• Speeds up healing from colds and flus
• Helps fight off infection
• Aids in post-exercise and post-surgery recovery
• Supports women through their pregnancy by helping excess fluid to move through their body swiftly
• Boosts weight loss
What Is the Difference in MLD Massage vs. the Others?
Unlike deep tissue or sports massages, MLD massage uses very light and rhythmic strokes. MLD is NOTHING like a deep tissue, trigger point, Swedish, sports or medical message! (If that is the type of massage you are looking for, please visit www.relaxcrossville.com) “Light and slow increases flow.” MLD uses relaxing, light, soothing strokes and gentle light pressure while slightly stretching the upper layer of skin. These strokes are the ones that will help to support your body’s natural drainage processes.
Ok, so what is it that happens?
Light, gentle pressure, gentle stretching of skin
Your therapist will apply gentle skin to skin pressure with their hands. These movements will be following the direction of your lymphatic pathways gently encouraging the flow of lymphatic fluid. Some treatments will be done in a specific sequence to ensure optimal drainage and circulation.
Focus on key areas
The massage typically begins near the lymph nodes in your neck, armpits, and groin—areas where lymph fluid collects. From there, the therapist works on other parts of your body, moving fluid toward these nodes for processing and elimination. This method helps clear blockages and enhances the efficiency of your lymphatic system.
Specialized Treatment Techniques
Your therapist may focus on areas that are prone to swelling, such as your legs, arms, or abdomen. If you are recovering from surgery, your therapist might concentrate on reducing swelling around the incision site. If you are experiencing swelling in specific areas, your therapist may focus on gently pushing those fluids towards the watershed areas and help relieve the pressure. Your MLD massage will be exclusively yours, focusing on your well being.
Satisfaction Side Note:
We want to make certain that we set your expectations and ensure you get the massage therapy that you need. Please keep in mind, this is NOT like a typical “massage” experience. There will not be knot removal from stressed muscles, no deep tissue work or penetrating strokes during your MLD massage. You will get an amazing experience and find a wonderful new way to dive into your personal wellness. But if you are looking for the tough stuff or even a Swedish massage, as stated above there are wonderful massage therapists in our area. We highly recommend the therapists just around the corner, at Relax Crossville Therapeutic Massage.

Who Cannot Receive An MLD Massage?
ABSOLUTE CONTRAINDICATIONS
DO NOT BOOK if you have any of the following:
MLD will not be performed until the condition is fully resolved or explicit medical clearance is given.
Proceeding with MLD during these conditions can cause severe complications, such as spreading infections, worsening organ failure, or dislodging blood clots.
The primary absolute and relative contraindications for MLD include:
• Acute Infections: Unresolved bacterial, viral, or fungal infections (like cellulitis). MLD can rapidly spread infectious agents and increase the risk of sepsis.
• Thrombosis & Embolism: Active or suspected Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Moving stagnant fluid could dislodge a clot, leading to embolism.
• Severe Cardiac Issues: Decompensated congestive heart failure (CHF) or unstable heart conditions. MLD shifts large volumes of fluid back into the circulatory system, which can overload a compromised heart.
• Renal Failure: Severe kidney disease or renal insufficiency.
• Active Bleeding & Hemorrhage: Open wounds, active bleeding, or acute trauma in the inflammatory phase.
• Uncontrolled Conditions: Severe, uncontrolled high or low blood pressure, and acute respiratory distress.
Relative Contraindications & Precautions
MLD may be a possibility BUT requires extreme caution, medical clearance, or specific adjustments to the session.
• Active Cancer: While MLD is highly beneficial for post-surgery oncology patients, it requires strict clearance from an oncologist to avoid spreading malignant cells.
• Thyroid Dysfunction: Massaging the neck can accelerate the release of thyroid hormones, making it risky for hyperthyroidism.
• Severe Asthma & Low Blood Pressure: Neck stimulation can trigger vagus nerve responses, and general treatment can affect blood pressure, requiring shorter, closely monitored sessions.
• Pregnancy: Will not be conducted during the first trimester or if there is a history of miscarriage.
• Menstruation: Can be a precaution as MLD may temporarily increase pelvic blood/fluid flow.
How Soon Will I Feel the Effects or Feel Better From MLD?
Just like people and their bodies are different, so are the way people experience MLD effects.
The time it takes to feel the effects of MLD massage depends on your specific body it’s needs and conditions. People often see a dramatic change in their urination and poo quite quickly, some within minutes and hours. Often accompanied by changes in colors and consistencies. People frequently notice reduced swelling and a feeling of lightness immediately after the session. Issues like sluggishness and fatigue may take 24 to 48 hours for the body to process and eliminate toxins completely, and this then leads to improved energy levels. The addressing of chronic conditions or surgical recovery, regular and consistent sessions may be needed over a period of time to achieve and maintain noticeable improvements. Be sure to hydrate, it can make all the difference in speed and efficiency of your MLD massage effects.
Can MLD Be Done at Home?
Yes, your therapist may actually send you home with homework to help you continue to get the most out of your MLD massage.
There are some lymphatic techniques that you can try at home. Things like dry brushing, with a dry-brush tool, can help stimulate the lymphatic fluid movement (make sure your strokes sweep upwards towards your heart). The Gua Sha tools can be used on the face and other areas of the body. These help to drain the fluids. Just your gentle light touch on areas can activate or stimulate your lymphatic system.
